This past weekend was opening weekend of Symphony on the Prairie (they call it that because it’s informative but sounds classier than “Music in a Field”). I made a chickpea pasta salad with lots of summer veggies, packed up my picnic blanket, a bottle of rosé, and a couple fabulous friends, and listened to Beethoven’s Fifth while watching the sun go down. In other words, I live a really tragic life with nothing to be thankful for.

I usually go more casual for SOTP, but this dress came in the mail the same day and it was so light and summery that I couldn’t wait to wear it. Plus the longer length is perfect for lounging on the ground and reaching repeatedly for the wine without flashing the rest of the prairie. I could easily wear this dress to work too, but the baseball cap seemed like the most obvious way to make it look sportier and more outdoorsy. Yes, this is my version of sporty and outdoorsy.

I went out for brunch last Sunday (in typical white girl fashion), and in my mind, brunch and oversized sweaters go hand in mimosa-toasting hand. So I put on a sweater and some jeans. Nothing out of the ordinary. I didn’t feel like washing my hair so I added a hat. Perfectly acceptable. I went back and forth on shoes before settling on these black flats just because they seemed like the easiest option. Finally, when it came time to put on outerwear, I decided to go just a little outside the box since the rest of the outfit was nothing special. Plus I hardly ever wear my cape!

I had no hang ups about my ensemble until my brunch mates pointed something out. I WAS DRESSED LIKE FREAKING SHERLOCK HOLMES. Really, Sarah? A tweed cap and a cape? What were you thinking? (They didn’t actually say that. They just laughed at me.) Despite the fact that I’m dressed like a detective, I’m unable to solve the mystery of why I’m dressed like a detective. From now on, coffee before dressing. Oy.

But wait. Here’s proof I can style this hat and cape in non-Sherlock ways. It’s the Real Life Remix…
