My devoted Instagram followers already know I was in New York City for a few days earlier this month. For Fashion Week, obviously, because I’m a highly influential blogger.

JK, I went for back-to-back conferences on art and fashion law, which is about 1000x cooler if you’re a big nerd like me. The conferences were awesome – informative, relevant, plus everyone was very well dressed. 😉

Kristin joined me on my workcation, so once the learning fun was over, we had some regular fun. We saw Moulin Rouge and Beetlejuice, did the NBC Studio tour, consumed lots of good food and drinks, saw old friends, and ended the weekend with a stroll on the High Line. Oh, and did I mention I met John Ralphio from Parks & Rec?!?!

This outfit is what I came up with when I wanted to look like I “belonged” in NYC, but more importantly, wanted to be myself. Fun fact: NYU was my first choice for college, and I didn’t get in. On this trip, one night I had dinner near campus and afterward I walked over to Washington Square Park. I took a minute to feel grateful for how my life turned out, even if it wasn’t what I imagined when I was 17.

When I first started my sustainable fashion journey, I tried to convince myself I loved the idea of a minimalist wardrobe. I thought I would just buy all the neutral things from Everlane and Aday and learn to combine them with my existing wardrobe in different ways to keep things fresh. Who needs bright colors and patterns and interesting silhouettes? Not me, no ma’am. I LOVE BASICS.

Obviously, that didn’t last. There’s nothing wrong with having a capsule wardrobe or sticking to neutrals if that floats your boatneck. But it’s just not me.

Luckily, I quickly discovered the magic of designer resale, which allowed me to add more fun pieces to my sustainable closet. I do still love Everlane, I just choose to layer my simple turtleneck under a gently used bold blazer from Theory.

The point is: there’s more than one way to do this tree-hugging thing. Find what works best for you.
