When: July 23 // Weather: hot // Real life: work, then anniversary tacos
I recently celebrated my 8-year wedding anniversary, and just to prove how in sync we are as a couple, we both forgot to get each other a gift. We used to put a lot of emphasis on gifts (anniversary, Christmas, etc.) in our early years of dating and marriage, but now we seem to care less about Tiffany necklaces and more about experiences we can have together. It’s not something we talked about; it just sort of happened.
I have a theory on this: When we were younger, we didn’t have much money, so making the effort to save up for something special and fancy was pretty meaningful. An expensive gift wasn’t just pretty – it also said “I worked hard and made sacrifices to get you this.” Now that we’re no longer starving artists, it’s not money that we’re lacking…it’s time. So this year’s anniversary might not have involved any blue boxes, but it did involve eating tacos on a patio while making googly eyes at each and talking about how much we dig our life together. I never imagined I’d be the girl who wanted to skip presents, but here we are.
(Also, honey, if you’re reading this…I do still like jewelry. Just to be clear.)
