I am no stranger to second-hand clothing stores, but mainly because I donate/sell so much of my own gently used clothing. I very rarely buy second-hand myself because it takes a lot of patience that I just don’t have. Sorting through everything to find something in my size, examining items to make sure there aren’t stains or pulls in fabric (or worse, weird smells)…I know there are hidden gems and great deals, but it’s just so much easier to buy new most of the time.

BUT! (You knew there was going to be a “but,” didn’t you?) I recently tried out thredUP (a huge online consignment store) because they offered me a $50 credit to check out what they have to offer. I had nothing to lose so I said yes. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised, and you know how much lawyers hate admitting when they’re wrong.

Perusing thredUP isn’t quite as pretty as perusing, say, a J. Crew catalog, but you have to remember that thredUP is processing a ton of pieces all the time as people mail them in. It’s not all going to look perfectly styled, but at least you see a photo of the exact thing you’re going to receive. What I like about thredUP is that you can pick your favorite brands and your sizes so you only see what you want to see. And my favorite part is that you can choose to see only new-with-tags or like-new items. I narrowed down my search to new or like-new J. Crew items in my size and ended up with this sweater and pumps that originally would have run me almost $400! BOOM! (By the way, thredUP is currently offering 50% off all J. Crew items for new customers with the code JCREW50.)

Don’t worry, I won’t stop buying new new clothes any time soon, but maybe I’ll be a little more open minded to other options. Because I clearly need to find more opportunities to shop, right?
