Here’s how a recent conversation went in Ann Taylor:

Me: “I can pull off a neck scarf, right?”

K: “Can I pull off a neck scarf?”

Me: “Be serious. Can I wear this?”

K: “Why is it called a neck scarf? Don’t all scarves go around your neck?”

Suffice it to say I never got a straight answer on whether I looked cool with a piece of silk tied around my neck. So naturally I bought it and wore it and here we are. What’s the verdict? (This is mostly a rhetorical question because I’ve already decided I look awesome.)

Most people don’t like to work on holidays, but I wish I could work only on holidays. I went in to the office on Monday because I’m taking a whole week off later this month and I have lots to do to clear off my desk. Plus I’m an overachiever.

Anyway, it was lovely. I could wear whatever I wanted (which ended up being this comfy t-shirt dress), there was no traffic, no line at Starbucks. And best of all: the office was so quiet. The only person I saw all day was the security guard. Bill is a delight and he doesn’t ask me when I’m going to have anything done. Bill can stay.

But you know what they say about all work and no play, so to celebrate my laboring on Labor Day, I went for a walk along the canal and had a gourmet veggie burger and wine on a patio. It was a great way to finish out a weekend of rainmaking…but without any actual rain, which was a nice bonus.

I can’t decide if I want to be that girl who follows the weather and the official season and sticks with “summer” style for the next couple weeks, or if I want to be that girl who immediately switches into fall mode just because it’s after Labor Day. So I’m going to be both. And you’re going to support me wholeheartedly as always. (Right?) Yesterday it was all of the bright colors and florals, and today it’s solid black and burgundy. Tomorrow – who knows? Maybe a fur vest. OK, no, it’s not going to be a fur vest, because that’s still in a tub in my basement. The point is: you love my unpredictable nature, and you can’t wait to see my next move.

This post is brought to you by Octer. And the letter S (for Sarah and shopping).

I need a new place to shop like America needs another male president, but guess what…I found a new place to shop. A UK-based shopping search engine called Octer set me up with a little shopping money to try out their platform which recently launched in the US.

Octer lets you search thousands of items from a bunch of different retailers, some of which I’m all too familiar with – Nordstrom, Macy’s, TJ Maxx… All of these places have already received plenty of my hard-earned money. I wanted to try something new (I’m nothing if not fantastically adventurous), so I checked out some of the other stores featured on Octer.

That’s what led me to Joules, which is where I ordered this floral top and the cute striped tee seen here! If you’re a fan of Boden, you’ll probably like Joules too (and you’ll really like the smaller price tags). I guess all the fun colors at Joules inspired me to wear my new bright floral top with an even brighter blazer. Like I said…I’m adventurous.

In case you need a break from all the Labor Day Sale announcements, here are a few outfits and other tidbits that didn’t make it to the blog (except…now I guess they have made it to the blog).

fit and flare LBD, striped headbandsimilar Dress // similar Headband // similar Bag // Shoes

I felt very cute and Parisian in this outfit, but it was mostly an accident. I fell back on a black dress because I didn’t know what else to wear, and the headband was just because I’m still figuring out the whole “growing out my bangs” thing.

skinny courduroysSweater (on sale) // Necklace (on sale)

This sweater is sorta gray on the front, and more gray on the back. The pants are also gray. But at least I wore pink shoes.

sephora brow builder review

I’ve gone my whole teenage and adult life without using any makeup on my brows, but now I’ve started and I can’t stop. I experimented with a couple drug store options, then settled on this combo of Sephora products: a brow pencil and brow builder. GAME CHANGER, people.

Ann Taylor stripe shirtdress

This is a goofy picture of me standing in a parking garage stairwell. Classy, right? But at least the dress is cute.

Last week’s casual Friday look. I felt like a Tomboy. I climbed a tree right after this photo was taken.

white eyelet dress, tan leather jacketsimilar Dress // similar Jacket // Shoes

I have to thank M Loves M for this outfit idea (and a lot of other outfit ideas, actually). Eyelet with leather seems like a pretty good end-of-summer combo. No tree climbing in this one though.

That’s all for now. Go have a kickass Labor Day Weekend.

culottes, breton tee, Kendra Scott color bar druzy ring

When: Wednesday // Weather: warm // Real life: work

I created this ring myself at Kendra Scott! If this lawyer thing doesn’t work out, maybe I have a future in jewelry design.

culottes, breton tee, Kendra Scott color bar druzy ring

At one point I was so sure culottes would make me look short, but I look freakishly tall in these photos, don’t I? Either I was wrong about culottes, or my camera is possessed with some kind of sorcery. I hate being wrong, so I’m going to assume it’s the latter. I mean, I know I’m wearing heels, but they’re not that tall. And remember when I wore my other pair of culottes with flats? There’s definitely something suspicious going on here.

I will now proceed to write a complaint to Canon asking them why their lens is making me look so good.

Oh man. Last weekend was rough. So rough, apparently, that it took me until today to even tell you how rough it was. Friday morning I was getting ready to leave for work when it suddenly turned pitch black and I heard the tornado sirens going off. Soon I could hear branches snapping outside, all around me. I did what any scaredy cat would do and went to the basement until the storm passed. When I came up and looked outside, I discovered we lost a huge piece of one of our trees, and so had pretty much every other property in our neighborhood. It was a mess. Luckily, nothing landed on our house, but keep in mind I’ve only been a homeowner for a year, so I’m not used to being responsible for these things.

I had a brief “why the hell did I buy a house, I’m only a child?!” moment, then figured out who to call about the tree, and went to work. I was grumpy at work because I had a cold (this story keeps getting sadder, doesn’t it?) but I held out hope because I knew I had free tickets to the Indianapolis Wine Festival for that evening.

Five o’clock finally came, and…thunder. Rain. More rain. Then it slowed down, so Kristin came downtown to meet me for the wine fest. Except…the rain came back. We tried to wait it out, but it just kept pouring. By the time we threw in the towel, things had gotten scary. All the roads were flooded, and it was raining so hard that sometimes you couldn’t tell you were about to drive into high water. (I heard later that we got 2.5″ of rain in a matter of 2-3 hours.) Somehow, we made it home safely it my little Sentra, soaking wet and pissed that our night was ruined.

Oh, was our night ruined. I went downstairs and discovered water coming up through the floor in the laundry room. Further investigation revealed there was also water under the carpet in the finished portion of the basement. This time, I had a not-so-brief “why the hell did I buy a house, I’m only a child?!” moment.

I’ll speed up the end of the story: Moving wet things out. Ripping up carpet. Shop-vac-ing for hours. Fighting back exhaustion and tears. Etcetera. Adulting is hard.

In better news, everything is drying out well, and we haven’t had any more issues even though it has rained every day since Friday. And the weekend wasn’t a total waste – we made it to Symphony on the Prairie on Saturday night to have a scrumptious picnic and see a Michael Jackson cover band. If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s that MJ cures everything.

P.S. Anyone wanna buy a house in Broad Ripple? It’s really cute and the basement is only slightly damp.

I was having a great hair day, and then I went outside for 3 minutes and it turned simultaneously fluffy and limp (how does that even happen?). I usually try not to complain about the humidity in Indiana because I grew up in North Carolina, which is way worse. But when I was a kid, I didn’t put in 20 minutes of effort into creating effortless looking waves in my hair. Limpyfluff aside, I did really like this outfit. I combined two of my favorite summer things (gingham and eyelet) with two more fall-ish suede accessories. I really think this Augustember thing is going to catch on.

I don’t know about you guys, but I still find gifts special even when I pick them out myself. On my birthday, I asked Kristin to take me shopping and let me pick out something at J. Crew. I had a few things in mind, tried them all on and did a mini fashion show, then Kristin helped me pick out what I should get! She picked this skirt, and I must say she has excellent taste. I mean, I do look pretty adorable in it. 😉

Even though this skirt was far from a surprise, I will always remember it was a gift from my favorite human (if only because I just wrote a blog post about it). Just like the human, the skirt is fun, playful, colorful, and perfect for every season! And yes, I will take that as a personal challenge to remix this skirt for fall, winter, and spring. Stay tuned.

Fringe theater festivals are good for many things: an excuse to get out of the house, see interesting dance and theater, feel all the feelings, watch your friends perform drunk Shakespeare…the list goes on.

But an often overlooked bonus: fringe festivals are a good excuse to get new fringed accessories to wear as a subtle nod to the occasion. Not enough people take advantage of this opportunity. (Actually, not enough people take advantage of Indy Fringe either. So if you live around here, go check it out!)
