This was my 4th of July outfit. Pretty patriotic, right? 😉 Yeah, I’m not a big flag waver. I consider myself lucky to be an American, but not proud. The whole national pride thing has never made sense to me. I feel like pride requires some kind of effort, and it took zero effort for me to be American. I’m not proud of having blue eyes, so why be proud of where I happened to be born? The people who should be proud of being American are the ones that got off their asses and had the courage to leave their homes to come here. Welcome. I’m proud of you.

Anyway, before anyone gets in a tizzy and leaves me an angry comment, I’m not trying to tell anyone else not to be proud. This is just one perspective (and it’s the same perspective I had when Obama was president).

But this is a style blog, so lest I get too serious, let me steer us back in the right direction: This bag is adorable and is without a doubt the most impractical accessory I own. Like, unless you still have one of those tiny circa 2004 Nokias, you’re going to need a pocket or a second bag for your phone. But, again, adorable.

A couple weeks ago I went to Seattle for a conference, and my lovely spouse came out to meet me so we could enjoy a couple days in the Pacific Northwest. It was the first time for both of us. Let me tell you, the flowers at Pike Place Market are no joke. They’re impossibly beautiful and so cheap. Kristin and I both had the same idea and surprised each other with bouquets (but I did it first so I win wife of the year).

On our first “day off” in Seattle, we took the ferry to Bainbridge Island to do some wine tasting at Eleven Winery and shopping at some local boutiques. Apparently, fruit prints are my new jam (pun intended), because while wearing this strawberry-print shirt, I bought a banana-print dress. Don’t worry, it will make an appearance on the blog before too long.

Back in the city, we took a self-guided tour of Smith Tower. If you ask me, from the outside, Smith Tower resembles a certain piece of anatomy that I do not possess. But on the inside, it’s art-deco fabulous, and there’s a speakeasy-style bar at the tip…I mean the top.
