Let me start by saying that this is NOT a Valentine’s Day post. I haven’t sold out that bad yet. But if you want to take any of the ideas contained in this non-Valentine’s Day post and use them to celebrate Valentine’s Day, don’t let me stop you.

Back on the way more legit holiday of Christmas, I got Kristin a “date in a bag” (along with a bunch of other things). I bought tickets to the Indiana State Museum, a gift card to a downtown restaurant, earrings and lipstick for her to wear on our date, and a bottle of wine to have once we got home. Then I printed out cute little tags explaining all the items and layered each thing between tissue paper in a bag. Voila – date in a bag!  I’m sure I’m not the first person to think of this idea, but I did come up with it on my own and I was pretty proud of myself.

The best part about this gift was that she got to enjoy the thoughtfulness when she opened it on Christmas, and then we both got to enjoy an already paid-for Sunday Funday several weeks later! We had a great time at the museum (where these photos were taken). There was a special exhibit all about prohibition that was seriously SO. COOL. It’s only open through the 15th, so if you live in central Indiana and you feel like doing something as cheesy as going on a date this Saturday, at least make it nerdy date.

If you DON’T want to bother trying to get a dinner reservation on the 14th, a date in a bag would make a great V-Day gift. Just enjoy the actual date on a less cliché day, perhaps. I know you’re probably jealous you can’t be married to someone as creative and thoughtful as me, but at least I share my secrets with you sometimes. Happy Valentine’s Day.

If you’re paying particularly close attention to these photos, you might have noticed that I folded over the cuffs on my sleeves. That’s actually the new style, you guys. It was in all the major fashion magazines this month. You should be really embarrassed if you missed the news. Sleeve cuffing is the new not putting your arms in your coat.

Coincidentally, I started doing the sleeve cuffing trend last week moments after a little bit of my lunch landed on the cuff of my adorable polka dot sweater. Last week was just a blur of spills. I don’t know how to explain it. Before last week, if you asked me when the last time was that I spilled something on my (non-PJ) clothes, I couldn’t have told you. I’m a dainty eater. I just don’t make much mess. I don’t even smudge my lipstick if I can help it.

So last week was like the Twilight Zone. On Tuesday, I spilled coffee on the front of my shirt. It was only a drop and I soaked it up, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how that drop escaped from the cup. Then on Wednesday, I wore the lovely sweater and midi skirt combo you see here. In the morning, I went to put lotion on my hands, and the bottle spat on my lap. Miraculously, I was able to soak that up too. Then, not even 3 hours later, I was grabbing some pasta from the buffet at our department lunch meeting, and a drop of marinara jumped out of the vat on right onto my sleeve! WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?!

I made it through Thursday unscathed, but on Friday I spilled coffee on the front of my dress. You probably think I’m just embellishing the story at this point. IF ONLY. But it’s a new week, and I have high hopes that I’ve left whatever messy alternate universe I was in last week. But just to be safe, I might ingest only water and dry sandwiches for the next several days.
