Two of my favorite pastimes: taking a stroll on a sunny day, and using invented adjectives to describe my clothes. So imagine my excitement earlier this week when I got to take a walk in the park wearing my drapey pants. I was happy to discover that J. Crew actually calls pants like these “drapey.” It’s not just me. And I think, as a general rule, what’s OK with Jenna Lyons should be OK with society as a whole. The Crew actually has a bunch of different pants they call “drapey” (see them all here) and they might be my new favorite thing. I know this style won’t magically fit and flatter everyone, but an elastic waist eliminates all the issues I have with big gaps in my waistband when the hips are snug. This is not a slow dance at a the Immaculate Heart Middle School – I don’t need to leave room for the Holy Spirit. (I worship Jenna Lyons anyway.)

I got this floral trench in 2008 (I know because it was from the Thakoon Target collection), and I’ve only worn it about once a year since then. Maybe less. Every time I get it out, I think: “Man, I hardly ever wear this. I should just get rid of it. I have too many coats anyway.” So then I decide I’ll take it out for one last spin before it goes to the consignment store. But then I realize how adorable it is, and I put it back in my closet to be rediscovered next year.

Yep, it happened again. Over the weekend it was sunny and lovely, but not quite warm enough to walk around outside without a jacket. Since I was already wearing stripes, and since I’m me, the elusive floral trench was a no-brainer. I fell in love with the print all over again, but I did realize the coat’s actually too big for me.

So what do you think – keep it another year, or let someone else enjoy the Comeback Coat?
