I made lots of new friends on Sunday night. Two of them were named Alli and Gator. Just kidding, I don’t know their names, but they were in fact baby alligators and I held one of them. My firm hosted a pretty stupendous (that’s an underused word, don’t you think?) party at this conference, and our big draws were the live band and the baby alligator photo op. Don’t worry, there were handlers there, and we are donating $500 to the Florida Everglades as a thank you to these cute little predators.

What do you wear when you know you’re going to a party with alligators? A cute cocktail dress that will make them feel right at home, obviously! It’s called “swamp chic” and it’s so hot right now. And yes, you will notice that I opted for flats and a crossbody bag instead of your typical heels and clutch. The latter set is just not practical for networking. If you’re looking for impractical outfit ideas, just let me know, and I can direct you to another blog or 2.

In addition to the alligators, I got to meet one of my lovely blog readers (hi Katrina!), and I busted a move with people from at least four different continents. All in all, a pretty successful night!

Remember that work trip I told you about? Well, I’m on it! After a brief travel hiccup, I made it to a very muggy Orlando on Friday night. Yesterday I checked into the conference, had what turned out to be a really fun coffee meeting with an attorney from Australia (he gave me a little stuffed kangaroo), and attended a session about cultural intelligence for trademark lawyers. Did you know that in China, Quaker Oats are labeled with Chinese characters that translate to Old Man Brand? That tickles me. Then there was an orientation and reception for first-time attendees, so I got some good advice (don’t drink too much, and make friends). I immediately put that advice to work, having one glass of wine and chatting with some other young attorneys from California, Arizona, and Tennessee.

I noticed most people were dressed more business casual (lots of suits), but I figured it was Saturday and I was in Florida so I would dress the part. I’ve found that the best thing to do when you’re dressed different than everyone else is not worry about it – and just tell yourself you’re dressed better than everyone else. 😉
