Last Friday we had a post-work date night at Giordano’s. It’s a popular spot, and combine that with the fact that it takes 45 minutes to bake a deep-dish pizza, and we had to wait a long time for our food. Like a really long time. I don’t remember the last time I was that deliriously hungry. In fact, I was so delirious that I became one of those people who has – what do you call it? A soul? Yeah, that’s it.
I started thinking about how long it had been since I had last eaten. It was less than five hours. And I had an agave margarita to tide me over, plus all the clean drinking water I could want. There are people in the world (like, a lot of them) who are hungrier than this every day. Maybe it was that margarita on an empty stomach, but it just made me feel sad and more than a little spoiled.
Once the pizza finally came (this just in: God is real), I regained enough strength to use my phone to make a donation to the Heifer Project. This will probably sound like I’m joking, but I’m actually trying to make a serious point here (it’s just that I express myself best in my native language of Snark). I know my reaction was kind of dramatic and impulsive, but I’ve dropped $100 impulsively on a pair of shoes on multiple occasions, so why not drop $100 on something more meaningful? Normally I try to make myself stop and think about my purchases, but I knew I had to make this donation right away before I rationalized it (or sobered up…let’s be honest). I try to avoid buyer’s remorse, but I doubt anyone has ever had donor’s remorse.
Normally I think it’s bad form to brag about your own charitable contributions, but I decided to share this little story with you anyway. I might not be a celebrity, but this little blog has enough followers I figure there’s some chance one or two of you will take a second to think about how freaking lucky we are. And maybe you’ll drink some tequila (optional) and make a donation too. I highly recommend checking out the work Heifer International does (right now they especially need help recovering from the earthquake in Nepal), but there are a lot of other options out there.
OK, now I’m going to return to my selfish, money-grubbing blogger ways and give you some affiliate links to what I’m wearing in today’s outfit post. Just remember that your clicks help support a person who sometimes donates her money to worthy causes while she is starving and slightly tipsy.

When my husband & I visited Chicago a few years ago, we ate at Giordano’s and had no idea about the wait time for pizza! Side note: those pants look so cute & comfy on you!

You know I love this post! Maybe we should all make it a habit to donate to charity every time we drink tequila. Or gin.or good clean water. (You look good in red, by the way. )
I donated and I’m sharing the link you posted on fb + twitter. Thanks for posting it! I recently had the same thought when waiting an exceptionally long time for a meal to arrive- at least I had a meal. So many others don’t get even that. It’s good to step out of our daily selfishness sometimes.
YOU ARE AWESOME.
So, for 2016 my +1 and I have decided to have our charitable contributions match our frivolous spending. Dinner dates are one thing, but say we pick up takeout on a night we’re too lazy to cook? The same amount that we paid is going to be put in a charitable account. I randomly buy a new coat? Same amount goes in the charitable account. You get the idea. That way we’re always prepared to say yes to any ask or need that resonates with us.
Unrelated, Giordano’s thin crust is also delicious.
I love The Heifer Project!! When my partner and I got married nearly 5 years ago, we decided to take the money we would have spent on wedding favors for our guests and made a big donation to The Heifer Project. We put little signs on all of our tables letting our guests know about The Heifer Project and our donation in honor of them, and we were pleased to get some great feedback. We always try to do everything we can to give back whenever we can. We also love to give Kiva loans as gifts to our friends and family 🙂
