…and explain to me why “buffalo plaid” is called that. And while we’re at it, what’s a buffalo gal?
OK, I just looked it up. The song “Buffalo Gals” refers to girls from Buffalo, NY. That’s not as interesting as I was hoping. I thought maybe buffalo gals were women in the wild west who tamed and rode buffaloes and, like, solved crimes and engaged in other general badassery. Nope, just chicks from upstate New York. Boring.
Well I still don’t know where the term “buffalo plaid” comes from and Google didn’t help me fast enough. Whoever can give me the best made-up story explaining the origin of buffalo plaid gets a million meaningless points. Alternatively, you can just compliment me on my mad neutral print-mixing skills. Happy Friday!

Hi! I just found your blog and I love your style! You said somewhere that you are petite but you do not look short to me. Love your how-to-wear series. I am really fashion-impaired and need inspiration. I usually buy my outfits as the store has style them on the mannequin…haha. Greetings from Oslo!
Thank you, Sarah (great name, by the way)! People ask me about my height all the time. I am 5’3″ which at least in the US is below average. I think I look taller in photos because (1) I’m thin, (2) I know how to dress to lengthen my body, and (3) it’s just hard to tell how tall someone is when you’re not standing next to them. 🙂
Well you look great. I am a few inches taller than you are but I have really short legs, so I feel like I look stumpy. Will keep your blog on my favorites list!
The term “buffalo plaid” can be traced to the early 1800s and the Lemhi Shoshone tribe of Idaho. The Shoshone were well-known for breeding what would now be called “designer” buffalo; a Lemhi buffalo could be easily recognized by its unique black and white markings. A talented young Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, guided Lewis and Clark safely through their expedition. As a token of goodwill to begin their journey, Sacagawea presented each member of the expedition team with a coat made of her tribe’s unique buffalo hide. After the success of the expedition, demand for “buffalo plaid” clothing skyrocketed and the Shoshone solidified their place in fashion history.
And the winner is…!
hehehehehe I visited family in the Buffalo region during winter and I must say…if you can live there year ’round, you’re pretty badass. 🙂 I do, however, love the idea of taming buffalo. Love your humor. Thank you!
Good point, Katie!
I love the pop of leopard you put with this outfit! All your outfits are so cute! Love looking at them all. 🙂
Well… According to http://www.tartansauthority.com/tartan/tartan-today/buffalo-plaid/
Some Rob Roy Tartan blankets were traded for buffalo skins and then it became known as buffalo plaid.
