It’s only about once a year that I bust out this little “capelet” thing. “Capelet” is the best suggestion I’ve had for what exactly to call it. It’s more than a scarf but less than a sweater. It’s sort of like a cape, but there are no arm holes. I wouldn’t quite call it outerwear, but I wouldn’t call it underwear either. WHAT ARE YOU, LITTLE KNIT THING?! Maybe its mystique is part of why I’ve kept it around for 5+ years.
Despite its awkward identity crisis, this little guy actually came in handy over the weekend. I wore this outfit on Saturday, which was a busy day spent in several different places with different temperatures. This sweater isn’t very warm – but I just loved the color with my tan boots – so when I was in a well-heated space, I could take the capelet off and be comfortable. But in chilly restaurants (I went to 2 of them), I kept it on to stay toasty. And when I went outside, I just adjusted it up and forward (wearing it more like an infinity scarf) so I could fit a coat on top. Well done, strange garment, well done.
Oh hey! Don’t forget about the latest giveaway (and the fabulous outfit that went with it)!

I think you are correct in calling is a capelet. Your’s would be a closed capelet. I have one, that is a little longer and a-symetrical. A bit like a short poncho, and I was told it was a closed cape. So there we go!
I love that skirt!! Just thought I should add that!
Great look, the knitted cape is cute! you can pair it with everything! even jeans and tee!

I love the capelet and this design was actually seen all over the runways last week, so you got a head-start on the trend! 🙂

I would wear this over a coat on cold days like today (-20F, -30C). I have a red faux fur one and a brown one. Just call it “insulator”. It adds an extra layer to protect your from the cold ambient air. So what?
Whatever you decide to call that thing, I like it. It looks good on you and it looks warm. Those are 2 really important things.
I think your “caplet” can be also called a cowl, there is something similar that Katniss wears in Catching Fire. It’s adorable.

Totally love that caplet! It’s so cute and cozy looking. Great outfit!
this skirt! I LOVE! and that capelet/sweater/scarf thing – you scored a winner, there, even if it keeps baffling you. I think the way you styled it is pretty great – keep everyone else guessing as to what it is, too!
Your little capelet-whatever-thing is super cute and seems like the perfect item to wear when you want just a little extra warmth. Also I LOVE that skirt!
