6 Ways to Wear a Denim Jacket

Not long ago, I was a denim jacket skeptic. Why would you want to wear jeans on your top half? Answer: because it’s awesome. Fast forward a few months and a dozen or so outfits, and the little jean jacket that could has earned its place in the latest installment of “How to Wear”!

So, are you convinced yet? If you were looking for a new way to wear your jean jacket, looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you. And if you don’t even have a denim jacket yet, fall is the perfect time to shop. A little tip from me to you: There are plenty of trendy and embellished versions out there (multi-colored, studded, ombre, leather sleeves, you name it), but if you want versatility, just go with the classic.

The shade of blue doesn’t really matter, but make sure the bottom hem hits you between your waist and hip bones. Any shorter and you’re in tween territory, and any longer is likely to look frumpy. Most importantly, look for a great fit in the shoulders with a little stretch so you can move comfortably. Below are just a couple options to get you started! (Shop them here: 1 // 2 // 3 // 4

  1. Nice feature! I really like seeing people re-wear stuff they already own in different ways because I think that’s reality for most of us. (P.S. I also just checked out your “Bracelets for small wrists” post. Good stuff. Seriously, bracelets need to come in sizes because it’s so hit or miss finding a good fit.)

  2. Wow, you are a convert! My problem is that they aren’t as comfy as a sweater, but I do like adding the structure and color to outfits. Each of these is great!

    1. True, but some sweaters I’m afraid to wear too many times because the knit will catch on something, or it will get stained or just wear out in the wash. But denim is tough and just gets better with age! That’s a big plus for me.

  3. I agree on your styling tips! I had a “cropped” denim jacket that was distressed and light washed…it just looked very young. Fortunately I thrifted a perfect Calvin Klein number to replace it, and now I have three denim jackets that work on my 27 year old self. I do think the trendy, acid-washed ones don’t really work on anyone, but that’s a personally opinion. Thanks for the tips!
